Birkenau
(ber-ken-ow)
1944-1945
Sub-camp to Auschwitz
Jack was loaded into the cattle cars with about 100 other prisoners and was brought to Birkenau. All prisoners were led through the fields and were led in to a shower chamber, then to the area where they were given new names or should I say numbers. This is where Jack lost his identity and was from then on Prisoner B-3087. During roll call in the square the Kapos (prisoners in charge of a group) would count their prisoners numbers then report it to an SS officer.
Auschwitz
(ow-shwitch)
1945
While in the cattle cars to Auschwitz Jack had witnessed to much to comprehend. The doors were opened and all he could look at was the black smoke rising from the chimneys. They were all herded like animals through the changing room being forced to undress, they were then taken to what they thought was a gas chamber but they were lucky enough for it to be showers. Jack only spent a week here before he was deported to yet another camp......Sachsenhausen.
